Our 12 weeks coaching has a set “one-off fee” with no other hidden extra costs, so does not change. The only things you will need to invest in other than the 12 weeks of coaching will be your New Website Templates ($97) which comes with its own training video tutorials you get to keep and maybe a few relevant domain names ($10 each) and that’s it.

After the 12 weeks is up we can shake hands and finish our work together.

Or, as the majority choose to do we can continue to work together for another 12 weeks on the same set fee, OR continue on a month-to-month basis thereafter. It’s totally flexible and the choice is yours.

Hi ….Well what a year and how fast it went by! Where the hell did it go?

Regardless of the state of the worlds economic situation right now, interest in Martial Arts classes still continues to grow and thrive. And that’s all because of you.

For some of you this has been your best year yet and for others…well, not so good.

And by having “done well” I think it’s fair to measure that in an increase in profitability, business development and growth. More money. Better systems. More students staying longer. Opening new locations or more classes.

A question then is why have some of you done “so well”? When according to what’s been happening on the news and what we hear its getting so tough out there!
More and more businesses are struggling just to survive let alone growing. And more and more are going out of business more frequently than ever before.

This is purely down to you…as I said earlier. And more importantly how you think about your school as a business.

A martial Arts school as a business is a sales machine that MUST continue to effectively attract new students through basic and innovative marketing, or suffer, never grow or die. It must then keep those new students happy and interested in its curriculum, system and you. Easy really. But not to all.

Well, here’s some good news for you. I think next year will be your year but only if you focus on those simple, easy steps that make any business tick. And one of THE MOST IMPORTANT areas for you will be online marketing. It’s a big subject.

So to get you in the mood I’m giving you some practical “useful tips” to help you understand it more. Do this and you’ll ultimately find more students from your online efforts.  Spend some time focusing on your online marketing efforts and help yourself reach new heights online.

Get yourself found and get yourself chosen. That’s the goal. 75% of Internet users go online to research services and products before they buy.

Here they are:

Your Website:

There are lots of schools out there, just like you, all competing for the attention of the same customers. Which means if you want to be found and chosen, in todays market place, you need to make the most of your online presence.

Once someone’s on your website you only have a very short time to make an initial impression. That’s why it’s more important than ever to make an intelligent approach to writing, designing and developing your site to stand out.

Your goal is to generate direct sales leads. Do this by having your Home Page as an overall advert for all your classes. Have links to each class you run from here. When they  land on the page they’re looking for (class) have something free for them to download using a web form. Something like a free report PDF or a Video. To get this they have to enter their Name and Email. This will capture their contact information which you will need later for marketing.

Alternatively you can use Sales & Landing Pages from your flyers to do this. Take them straight to the page you are advertising with a massive call-to-action and desire to follow-up with you.

Say this page is for a Children’s class for example. Simply ad that pages URL web address on the flyer or advert. This bypasses your home page and avoids any unnecessary navigation. This has been proven to increase a websites sales enquiries and is something I teach via my coaching programs.

Another way is to use Squeeze Pages. Having a separate page and a domain name that is linked to your class makes logical sense and is used by all savvy Internet Marketing businesses. Why? It increases your chances of data capturing. Has what they are looking for. And having a domain name with your town and the type of class its about is what search engines like.

Here are a few more subjects to study.

Search Engine Optimisation

Make sure your website contains all the right keywords people use when they are searching. Be thorough and detailed in describing your school and particularly where you are and who you are. Add photos and video and relevant content to your pages and site. The more interesting and original you are the more likely you are to bring in new students.

Make sure you use links to and from other sites if you can as this increases your sites importance. Use your squeeze pages for this and other local forums, social networks and blogs.

Google AdWords

With Google AdWords a small advert for your school appears in a highly visible location on Google search results when a potential customer types in the relevant keywords.
However a rule of thumb is; do not send them to your home page (the adverts destination link). Instead send them to a Squeeze page or Landing Page. YThis will increase your chances and save you money. Every time someone clicks on your advert it costs you so get smart.

Social Media

We all know about Facebook and Twitter and these platforms are now key components the marketing mix for small businesses like Martial Arts schools. They create a two-way channel between you and your students and potential customers.

They are fast, low cost and a fantastic way to create and maintain dialogue with existing students, new ones and even competitors.

61% of small business owners already use social media to identify and attract new business – with over 700,000 local businesses having active pages on Facebook alone!

Online Video

Don’t just tell them…show them! More and more potential consumers are watching video content online. It’s an increasing way to enhance your sales message and present your school in a more dynamic way. A short film can get a real taste of hat your all about. You can use class action and dialogue which appears on screen to help get your message across.

Use powerpoint video too…yes it can be done and is a highly effective way to generate sales.

One observation I can add here is, if you can, don’t have videos that just have music playing. Make them personal

Over a third of all traffic comes from online video. And if your video has a call to actionHave you got a YouTube Channel yet?

Online Reviews

“Word-Of-Mouth” recommendations have always been great for business. Did you know 3 out of 5 local businesses in your area claim that it’s their most important source of new business. And it’s no different for online sales. 86% of UK online consumers rely on ratings and product reviews when making purchasing decisions. And consumer reviews are 12 times more trusted than product or service descriptions.

So, to put it another way, Internet reviews about your classes and school (testimonials) are seriously good for your business. Make them available on every sales page you have. Include a picture of the student or parents if it’s not a video review. And they have to be genuine…so don’t make em up!

This is just an overview for you but is a great way to start thinking about online marketing for your school.

If you are already working on this area then concentrate on video next yearr and getting them looking right and working for your sales.

If you are looking for a new Website OR want help updating or adding Squeeze Pages then contact me for advice.

Mile Dillard inducted into the Black Belt Hall of Fame!

Black Belt Magazine 2011 Man Of The Year.

Many of you may, or may not know I helped pioneer Century Martial Arts training gear into the UK and European Martial Arts industry over the past 10 or so years. We had some fun doing it and I quickly built up a strong business relationship with Century and their team.

The people at the top rarely change which tells you something about it’s leader…Mike Dillard.

I met and got to know Mike Dillard not long after that initial beginning and more so after I me with Frank Silverman and launched MAIA (Martial Arts Industry Association) into the UK. I have been present at the MA Supershow in Las Vegas 8 times since then including their first event at the Hilton Las Vegas.

I had the privilege to spend some time with Mike staying with him at his home in Oklahoma few years ago. He is, in my mind and many others, Highly Competitive in everything he does (including racket ball)! and a visionary. I remember driving with Mike in Oklahoma City and passing a company building with a big “Dillard Realty” sign outside the front of it. “That companies name is the same as yours Mike” I commented..well it is his name and that turned out to be “his” commercial Real Estate business! He has business fingers in many pies!

Mike is also guilty of introducing me to Crispy Creme Donuts!….something I avoid now with a passion! There just too good you see. We went shooting clays together which was fun. One day he asked me if I wanted to go motor racing with him? This turned out to be racing HIS cars! These were those little Legend Cars with 1100cc Motorcycle engines in them. What a day that was. Oh, and Mike is a former World Champion in these stupidly quick machines!

That’s just a snippet of my experience with the man…

Here’s a sample of the interview Black Belt Magazine did with the Founder and CEO of CENTURY MARTIAL ARTS Inc. Mike Dillard PLUS Hall Of Fame Induction VIDEO…and see for your self just “How Large” the Century Martial Arts operation really is…

Interview segment:

Black Belt: Now that MMA has become so popular around the world, do you see the martial arts industry in general heading in that direction?
Mike Dillard: I think both traditional martial arts and MMA will succeed. A guy at a T-shirt company recently told me: “Traditional martial arts are dead. All the karate schools are going to close and be replaced by MMA schools.”

I said: “You can’t believe that! What will happen, to the extent that it’s appropriate, is traditional schools will integrate MMA into their teaching if that’s what the public wants.” There will always be a place for traditional martial arts.

For example, I don’t think MMA is necessarily the best thing for a 6-year-old child. When Mom walks into the dojo with little Johnny and sees blood on the floor, she’ll turn around and walk out. Traditional martial arts will always be strong.

Also, you see a far greater percentage of women and girls in martial arts classes now than in previous decades. Often they don’t want a sweaty body rubbing around on them or some guy lying on top of them. But they still want to learn martial arts and self-defense.

Black Belt: When the Black Belt staff interacts with the traditional martial arts community, some of the people say they’re concerned about how slow things are right now. Do you think that’s because of the rise of MMA or because of the poor economy?
Mike Dillard: The economy is definitely hitting the martial arts—there’s no doubt that every dollar spent in martial arts is discretionary spending. I don’t think people should be scared at all about MMA; if they are, they should learn to teach it. But they shouldn’t ever give up their roots.

Black Belt: Could you elaborate on age and MMA? What’s appropriate for young students to do in class?
Mike Dillard: Judo and jiu-jitsu are great for younger people, but I don’t think students under 18 should be forgoing other training to do MMA. If they desire to get into it eventually, they should start by developing their skill set with judo and jiu-jitsu, and maybe some Golden Gloves boxing. When it comes to developing that skill set, I was lucky. I happened to go to a high school where I became a wrestler. I happened to have a buddy who was a black belt and started teaching me traditional martial arts. I happened to have a gym nearby where they were training a world-champion boxer named Sean O’Grady.

Black Belt: If you were 20 years old right now, would you be in MMA?
Mike Dillard: I was practically there. Would I have gotten into MMA? Yes. Would I have given up my traditional training? Never. Let me say this: The mindset, the attitude and the desire—all the qualities that make champions today—were making people champions back then. The same things that made Bill Wallace, Joe Lewis, Chuck Norris and, to whatever degree, myself champions back then would have made us champions today. It’s not an evolutionary process; we’re not getting a new species of fighter. It’s the same things, just with a different set of rules.

Black Belt: What role can MMA training play in the life of a person who wants to be a martial artist but isn’t driven to be an MMA champion?
Mike Dillard: MMA is great for any adult if it’s taught properly in a controlled environment. I see MMA the way Matt Hughes described it: as a toolbox. My personal toolbox has my boxing experience, my wrestling experience, my judo and jiu-jitsu experience, my taekwondo experience and a couple years of karate experience. Somebody else’s may have kung fu and muay Thai. Kids should start building their toolbox at a young age with punching and kicking. Then they need to get comfortable on the mat, and if they do that with wrestling or judo or jiu-jitsu, that’s fine. Anybody can learn punching and kicking in a year; you can’t learn to be a great wrestler in a year. It takes longer, so they have to start earlier. Later, if they so desire, they can take their toolbox to the octagon.

However, if students get hurt all the time in training—whether it’s traditional martial arts or MMA—it’s not a good thing. No one should get hurt in class. Training should be accessible to all levels of athletes and to people who desire to be athletes.

Black Belt: Do you think MMA is a fad?
Mike Dillard: No. It’s here to stay. Will it peak? Yes. Everything peaks. Even pro football has peaked. I think MMA will peak at a high level.

Black Belt: Please explain.
Mike Dillard: You pull into an intersection, and there are four corners. Here you have a basketball game and there a soccer game. Over there is a football game. If a fight breaks out on that fourth corner, everybody will stop to watch. Fighting is not going to go away. Is MMA supplanting traditional martial arts? No. What it’s really helping is the wrestling clubs in the country; they’re full of young people talking about MMA. Now they’ve got a place to go, and that’s good because kids need something to aspire to.

Black Belt: How long did it take for you and Century Martial Arts to realize MMA was here to stay?
Mike Dillard: I won’t say we were the first to figure it out because we weren’t. I knew the Gracies and Machados pretty well, and Chuck Norris had brought [grappling] into our system early on—we were all studying Brazilian jiu-jitsu. I was enthralled by MMA, but they didn’t wear anything Century sold. So I didn’t see that it mattered much—I was just a big fan.

Then the gloves standardized a bit, and we started working with Dana White. That guy has the heart and soul of a martial artist. When he’s here at Century, he wants one of everything we sell—which I love. He loves martial arts and wants to keep the UFC about martial arts. We clicked, and now we have an exclusive contract with them for UFC training gear and gloves. So we weren’t the first to recognize that MMA would be big, but we’re sure glad we’re here.

Black Belt: What is it like interacting with the UFC and its fighters?
Mike Dillard: They help us design and test training aids. Fighters come here all the time, and we send things out to them for input. If they send back a heavy bag that ripped, we have our engineers examine it to fix the problem. They figured out their athletes’ careers are lengthened by having proper gear; they’re very cognizant of safety.

I’ve yet to meet a UFC fighter who wasn’t a gentleman and a class act.

(For more on Century Martial Arts founder Mike Dillard, check out the August Issue of Black Belt magazine.)

FINAL Marketing post. Enjoy and do something positive with the list.

14. Prepare A Realistic Budget. Don’t force your marketing group to live with a low or non-existent budget. Be realistic about your expectations and provide appropriate funding to increase your chances for success.

15. Don’t Try To Spend Your Way To Success. On the other hand, if you spend too much money on marketing, you may not get value for your investment. Carelessly spending dollars on marketing does not always guarantee sales. You may need to rethink the media and promotional offers that currently make up your marketing program. Introduce a social media program that starts with a real strategy and has the manpower to execute it over a sustained timeframe. At least 2 years and if possible forever.

16. Promote Your Website & Social Media Pages In Traditional Media And Within Each Other. An important lesson recently learned by many participants in the internet is the need to go outside of it to traditional media. Aside from producing a well thought-out website and social media presence, the key to success on the net is to let your target group know where your site and social media pages are located. Add your web address and social media pages to all of your communication materials: business cards, letterhead, invoices, flyers, packaging, and cross promoting between all your social media etc.

17. Answer The Telephone Properly. The habit of not answering the telephone properly or having an uninformed person answering it for you can be damaging. Customers and prospects become frustrated when they can’t get answers to their questions. Train your staff well and equip them with the most up-to-date information. If they shouldn’t be answering the telephone, don’t let them.

18. Don’t Lose Orders. They are so hard to get these days how can you even think about losing them. The problems of lost orders or orders not completed on time can be easy to resolve. Create a step-by-step fulfillment process with checking systems to make sure that an order is controlled from beginning to end.

19. Promote Yourself. Some business owners believe that the product or service they offer should be as irresistible to others as it is to them and that customers should just come to them without promotion. Not promoting yourself will only serve to keep your business a secret.

20. Encourage Others To Promote You. It is just as important to encourage others to promote you. If someone else has a clear understanding of what your company does and who your target group is, they can help to promote you. Develop a brief statement that identifies who you are, what you do, who you do it for, and why you are different from competitors. Make sure that anyone who may be representing your company to prospects understands this message.

21. Face Negative Word of Mouth Head-On. Negative word of mouth statements can have a devastating impact on your sales, far beyond one or two unhappy customers. Solve the problem quickly and win customers back. Those customers will be your best salespeople.

22. Use Resources Around You. The failure to use readily available resources can lead to wasted opportunities. Seek out government self-help offices, associations, consultants, internet sites, and libraries. Talk to customers and suppliers and study your competitors.

23. Be Better Than Competitors. Don’t just try to be as good as the competition, be better than them, offer something different, provide better service, etc.
